Yoo Ui Tae shares his thoughts on working alongside senior actor Han Seok Kyu in Doubt.
Doubt follows Jang Tae Su (Han Seok Kyu), the nation’s top profiler, who comes to know about his daughter’s secret intertwined with a murder case he’s investigating.
Through MBC’s Doubt, Yoo Ui Tae worked with Han Seok Kyu for the first time. Yoo played the role of Ha Bin’s (Chae Won Bin), Jang Tae Su’s daughter’s, homeroom teacher. His character is a figure who is mistaken as the culprit of a murder case.
Yoo Ui Tae had a scene with Han Seok Kyu in the interrogation room in the latter half of the drama. He recalled a memorable episode from that experience.
He shared, “It’s impossible not to feel nervous when filming with Han Seok Kyu sunbae [senior]. I had never experienced this before while shooting, but suddenly my mind went completely blank. I felt confused and frustrated for the first time, and I think he noticed that. He suggested we step outside for a break.”
Yoo continued, “When we were outside, just looking into his eyes gave me the energy to turn fiction into reality. He carefully gave me advice, saying things like, ‘How about trying it this way?’ and even gave me words of praise.”
Furthermore, Yoo Ui Tae expressed, “I grew up watching subae’s works from a young age. That’s why I couldn’t easily approach him.” He added, “But he (Han Seok Kyu) came to me first and talked about some things, for which I was really grateful.”
Working alongside Han Seok Kyu, Yoo Ui Tae also learned a great deal, particularly from the senior actor’s professional approach. Yoo shared, “Before a shot, I would hear him say to himself, ‘Observe, feel, and speak.’ In that moment, he fully immerses himself in the emotion, and once the cut is called, he becomes a completely different person. That kind of professionalism is so impressive.”
He continued, “I’ve had more opportunities to act alongside senior actors than with actors my own age. I want to take something from each of them and combine those lessons to become an actor who can blend all of those experiences.”
Although Doubt has concluded its airing, it is still available to watch on OTT platforms at any time. In light of this, Yoo Ui Tae shared a message for people who haven’t seen the drama yet.
He said, “This drama is a suspense thriller. People who really like mystery will really enjoy it. It’s a story about faith, trust, lies, and also about family. As you watch, you’ll find yourself questioning things, and I think it will be even more enjoyable if you keep reflecting on those doubts as the story unfolds.”
