Netflix’s sports survival show ‘Rugged Rugby: Conquer or Die’ premiers today

Netflix’s sports survival variety show Rugged Rugby: Conquer or Die is releasing today.

Rugged Rugby: Conquer or Die showcases the battles of rugby players who throw themselves into the game and push forward with desperate determination for victory. Episodes 1 to 4 are being released on December 10.

Rugged Rugby: Conquer or Die promises to deliver the unwavering passion and heartfelt dedication of South Korean rugby players in a country often described as a “rugby desert,” generating high anticipation. Despite having only four corporate rugby teams, ten college teams, and a single league, Rugged Rugby: Conquer or Die aims to cheer on those who refuse to give up on rugby in South Korea.

Episodes 1-4 will feature seven teams participating in the face-off. PD Jang Si Won takes the helm of Rugged Rugby: Conquer or Die.

Jang commented, “Rugby is a really rough sport. It’s a game where you must push forward to win, and even in fear, you face challenges head-on — that’s the unique charm of rugby. I wanted to showcase the new world of rugby, where players give their all as if it were their last [chance].”

He also shared, “I focused on making the show enjoyable even for those unfamiliar with rugby.”

To convey the appeal of rugby, Jang “wanted to capture the sounds of players’ bones hitting one another on the field, the heavy breaths of athletes weighing 100 Kg running for 80 minutes. To achieve this, we had to develop new equipment and set up an entirely new filming system.” As a result, he spent a long time of 1 year and 6 months from planning to production.

The production team for Rugged Rugby: Conquer or Die deployed 140 cameras — the largest number ever used in rugby coverage. Additionally, they developed ultra-compact, high-performance special audio equipment to capture the sounds of the field. Custom equipment was tailored to fit the physiques of nearly 200 players across the seven participating teams.

PD Jang Si Won added, “To fully capture the energy of the players felt on-site, we worked on audio mixing to create a sound balance entirely different from existing content.”
