Disney+ unveils the behind-the-scenes of its upcoming thriller Light Shop.
Light Shop is a story that unravels when strangers with stories and secrets visit a mysterious light shop, the only place that lights up the end of a dark alley. A-list actors, including Ju Ji Hoon, Park Bo Young, Uhm Tae Goo, Bae Sung Woo, Lee Jung Eun, and more, are starring in the K-drama. The Disney+ series is adapted from Kang Full’s webtoon of the same name.
Kang Full commented, “It might seem like a horror story at first, but when you delve deeper, it’s a very emotional story. So, I wanted to showcase various relationships within it.”
Director Kim Hee Won, making his directorial debut with Light Shop, shared, “We discussed a lot about what kind of philosophy and worldview would best resonate with the audience.” He expressed the extensive contemplation that went into directing this K-drama.
The spotlight also falls on the exceptional cast, who seamlessly bring to life the mysterious characters.
Actor Ju Ji Hoon, introducing his character, shared, “I play Won Young, the owner of Light Shop, who observes mysterious people coming and going from the store.” Writer Kang Full added, “I wanted the character to be a bit mysterious, making the audience wonder, ‘Who is he, really?”’
Actress Park Bo Young takes on the role of Young Ji, a nurse working in an intensive care unit. She explained, “Young Ji is a character who begins to see things that are not meant to be seen,” heightening intrigue.
Kim Seol Hyun, who plays a mysterious woman, Ji Young, remarked, “I tried my best to bring a look and feel [of the character] as close to the webtoon as possible.” Writer Kang Full, impressed by her portrayal, commented, “Seeing her on set, I was struck by how much she truly felt like Ji Young [from the webtoon].”
The introduction continued with a lineup of actors including Bae Sung Woo, Lee Jung Eun, Shin Eun Soo, Kim Min Ha, Park Hyuk Kwon, Kim Seon Hwa, and Kim Ki Hae. Writer Kang Full remarked, “Every actor brought their character to life through their acting skills,” raising anticipation for the performances they will deliver.
The symbolic setting of Light Shop also draws attention with its intricate production design. Director Kim Hee Won explained, “If the store is too fantasy-like, audiences will find it hard to empathize with; if it felt too realistic, it wouldn’t fit the tone of the drama. We spent a long time working on the design.”
Art director Shin Yoo Jin added, “I designed it [the drama] focusing on the emotional feeling the space gives,” emphasizing the effort put into crafting the store’s overall mood. In closing, Ju Ji Hoon shared, “I believe viewers will be deeply moved by how writer Kang Full unravels humanism.”
Park Bo Young remarked, “Each story has a powerful impact.” Kim Seol Hyun expressed her hopes, saying, “I hope it becomes a drama that people want to re-watch.” Uhm Tae Goo confidently stated, “It won’t disappoint,” reaffirming the series as a must-watch this holiday season.
Light Shop will air a total of 8 episodes. The K-drama will release four episodes on December 4, followed by two episodes each week, only on Disney+. Watch the behind-the-scenes video here.
